Maintenance Packages
What is it?
A rip and relay is a process where our team of professionals can reuse your existing paving stones and restore your patio to look brand new. We offer this service in various forms to help give you the best service for your specific job at a cost affordable to you. Our various offers are as follows:
- Basic Rip and Relay - Reusing old base material and pavers
- Pro Rip and Relay - New base construction + reusing pavers
- Basic package with New Pavers - reusing old base material + new pavers
- All new build + new base construction and new pavers
During our quoting process, an initial assessment will be conducted to advise our customer on which of these 4 options may work best for you and your home.
Initial Assessment:
- Our experienced team will conduct a thorough assessment of your existing paved area. This includes examining the condition of the current pavers, checking for any underlying issues, and evaluating the overall stability of the surface.
Package details
This option will be the most cost-effective method as it requires the least time and material cost. We typically advise, even with this method, that a new border stone is used. This will be a minimal additional cost but allows the loss of any pavers that may be broken or damaged which would result in the inability to complete the patio as it was.
- Our team will come in and begin by pressure washing the existing stones to clean them of any debris that has built up over the years.
- The stones are then lifted and neatly stacked to the side.
- The next step is recompacting the base material that is currently installed.
- Once this is completed our team will regrade the area adding in a new bedding layer. This step allows us to get your paver patio leveled properly ensuring proper water drainage and removal of any tripping hazards.
- Next is relaying the old paving stones. We carefully relay the pavers in the same pattern as they were removed.
- Once laid we apply new polymeric joint sand to the paver patio space. During this process, we compact the space allowing all the joint sand to migrate in between the pavers ensuring maximum adhesion between pavers.
- Finally, we apply a concrete edge restraint to any edges of the patio that are not against a solid structure.
Before concluding the project, we conduct a final inspection to guarantee that every aspect of the rip and relay process has been executed to our high standards. Your satisfaction is our priority.
Throughout the entire process, we prioritize open communication, transparency, and quality workmanship. If you have any questions or concerns at any stage, please feel free to reach out.
Pro Rip and Relay - New base construction + reusing pavers
If your old paver patio is experiencing some extreme failures such as; large low areas where water gathers, upheaval of certain areas, or severe tree root damage, we can offer a complete new base construction.
- Our team will come in and begin by pressure washing the existing stones to clean them of any debris that has built up over the years.
- The stones are then lifted and neatly stacked to the side.
- We then excavate the old paver base and prepare the area for a new base install
- Excavation is dug to approximately 6-10in depending on job site specifics. Our team compacts the subsoil before we lay down a geotextile fabric to separate the soil from the base material. A layer of ¾ clear stone is installed and repeatedly compacted to prepare for a final bedding layer. The bedding layer is a small aggregate stone called HPB(High-Performance Bedding). The HPB is graded as the final step before the pavers are installed.
- The old pavers are now carefully relayed onto the patio space in the same pattern as before.
- Basic package with New Pavers - reusing old base material + new pavers
This package is the same process as option 1, but instead of reusing the old material we installed a newly selected paver or slab. This step allows you to save significant costs while still achieving a newer patio look to your home.
The cost of this option vs option 1 is nearly identical too as there is far less labour involved in using new paving stones.
- All new build + new base construction and new pavers
Option 4 takes the same steps as option 2 but uses new pavers instead of reusing the old.
Maintenance Packages:
To increase the longevity of your patio and bring it to the next level of revamping the space we offer several maintenance packages as well. These can be added to any of the 4 options listed above or can be for a patio that is in good shape and just needs a little love to bring it back to its original colour and shine!
Patio Sealant
Why seal your patio?
- Enhanced Appearance:
- Sealing pavers can intensify the natural colors and textures of the stones, giving the patio a vibrant and well-maintained look. It adds a glossy or satin finish, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal.
- Stain Resistance:
- Sealer creates a protective barrier on the surface of the pavers, making them less susceptible to stains from spills, dirt, oil, or other substances. This is especially beneficial in outdoor spaces where the patio is exposed to various elements.
- Durability and Longevity:
- The sealant helps to protect the pavers from the damaging effects of weather, UV rays, and freeze-thaw cycles. It can prevent erosion, cracking, and fading, thereby extending the life of the patio and reducing the need for repairs or replacements.
- Easier Maintenance:
- Sealed pavers are generally easier to clean and maintain. The sealed surface makes it more difficult for dirt and debris to penetrate, allowing for easier removal through regular sweeping or light pressure washing.
- Joint Stabilization:
- Some sealers come with joint stabilizing properties, helping to prevent sand or jointing material erosion. This stabilizes the interlocking system of the pavers, reducing the likelihood of them shifting or becoming uneven over time.
- Weed and Moss Prevention:
- Sealing can inhibit the growth of weeds and moss between the pavers by minimizing the availability of nutrients and moisture in the joints. This contributes to a cleaner and more pristine appearance.
- Easier Snow and Ice Removal:
- In colder climates, a sealed paver patio can make it easier to remove snow and ice. The sealant helps to prevent the adhesion of ice to the pavers, making it simpler to shovel or use ice-melting products.
- Resistant to Efflorescence:
- Efflorescence is a white, powdery substance that can appear on the surface of pavers. Sealing helps to minimize efflorescence by reducing the penetration of water and minerals into the pavers.
Pressure washing
Pressure washing a paver patio is a common and effective maintenance practice that offers several benefits.
Removal of Surface Dirt and Debris:
- Over time, outdoor spaces accumulate dirt, dust, leaves, and other debris. Pressure washing is an efficient way to remove this surface layer, restoring the clean and fresh appearance of the pavers.
- Algae and Mold Removal:
- Shaded or damp areas can sometimes develop algae, mold, or mildew on the surface of pavers. Pressure washing with an appropriate cleaning solution can effectively remove these organic growths, improving the overall cleanliness and hygiene of the patio.
- Stain Removal:
- Stains from spills, oil, grease, or other substances can mar the appearance of pavers. Pressure washing can help lift and remove these stains, restoring the natural beauty of the patio.
- Weed and Moss Control:
- Pressure washing can dislodge and remove weeds, moss, or other vegetation growing in the joints between pavers. This helps in preventing the expansion of plant growth and keeps the patio looking neat.
- Preparation for Sealing:
- Before applying a new coat of sealer to the paver patio, it's essential to clean the surface thoroughly. Pressure washing removes dirt and contaminants, ensuring a clean and receptive surface for the sealer to adhere to effectively.
- Prevention of Efflorescence:
- Efflorescence is a white, powdery substance that can appear on the surface of pavers due to the migration of minerals. Pressure washing helps to remove efflorescence, maintaining the aesthetic quality of the patio.
- Maintenance of Interlocking System:
- Paver patios often rely on an interlocking system to maintain stability. Pressure washing can help clear out sand or jointing material that may have been displaced, ensuring that the pavers remain securely in place.
New Polymeric Joint Sand Application
Reapplying polymeric joint sand to a paver patio is a maintenance practice that offers several benefits, especially in terms of stability, aesthetics, and overall longevity of the paved surface. Here are some reasons why someone might choose to reapply polymeric joint sand:
- Joint Stabilization:
- Polymeric joint sand is designed to harden and create a stable, cohesive bond between pavers. Over time, due to weather exposure, foot traffic, and other factors, this sand may erode or break down. Reapplying polymeric joint sand helps restore the stabilizing effect, preventing the movement or shifting of pavers.
- Weed and Insect Prevention:
- Polymeric sand creates a barrier in the joints between pavers, making it more difficult for weeds to take root. It also deters insects and ants from establishing nests in the gaps. Reapplying the sand helps maintain a weed-free and pest-resistant patio.
- Improved Aesthetics:
- Polymeric joint sand often comes in various colors, and reapplying it can enhance the overall appearance of the patio. It can refresh the original color, provide a uniform look, and contribute to the visual appeal of the paved surface.
- Resistance to Erosion:
- Erosion of joint sand can occur due to rain, wind, or other environmental factors. By reapplying polymeric joint sand, you create a renewed layer of protection against erosion, preserving the integrity of the joints and preventing the washout of sand.
- Enhanced Durability:
- The presence of polymeric joint sand reinforces the structural integrity of the paver patio by creating a solid bond between adjacent pavers. This added stability improves the overall durability of the paved surface, reducing the likelihood of individual pavers becoming loose or uneven.
- Prevention of Ant Nests:
- Ants are known to create nests in the joints between pavers, which can lead to instability and an uneven surface. Reapplying polymeric joint sand helps create an inhospitable environment for ants, discouraging nest formation.
- Preparation for Sealing:
- If the paver patio is sealed or if a homeowner plans to apply a new coat of sealer, reapplying polymeric joint sand beforehand ensures that the joints are well-filled and stable. This contributes to a more effective and even application of the sealer.
- Maintenance of Interlock:
- Pavers often rely on an interlocking system for stability. Reapplying polymeric joint sand maintains the proper spacing and interlock between pavers, preventing them from shifting or settling unevenly.
New Edge Restraint Installation
The number 1 reason interlocking patios fail is improper edge restraint. This is the area you will see fail first and it will cause a chain reaction of failures throughout the entire patio space. Technology keeps advancing in this area and plastic edge restraint is a thing of the past. Concrete and modified concrete products are the best way to ensure your patio edges do not fail!
- Prevention of Paver Movement:
- Edge restraints serve as a barrier that prevents the lateral movement or spreading of the pavers. This is particularly important in areas where there is vehicular traffic or heavy foot traffic, as it helps maintain the integrity of the paved surface over time.
- Control of Edge Erosion:
- Over time, the edges of a paver patio may be prone to erosion due to factors like rain, wind, or foot traffic. Installing new edge restraints provides additional support, helping to prevent the erosion of the base material and maintaining a neat and defined edge.
- Enhanced Structural Integrity:
- Edge restraints contribute to the overall stability and structural integrity of the paver patio. They help keep the individual pavers in place, preventing them from shifting or becoming uneven, which could result in an unstable surface.
- Professional Appearance:
- Well-maintained and properly installed edge restraints contribute to a professional and polished appearance for the paver patio. They create clean lines and define the boundary of the paved area, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of the outdoor space.
- Weed and Grass Control:
- Edge restraints act as a barrier that helps prevent the intrusion of weeds, grass, or other vegetation into the paver joints. This can contribute to easier maintenance and a cleaner overall look for the patio.
- Facilitation of Proper Drainage:
- Adequate edge restraints help in maintaining the slope and grade of the paver patio. This ensures that water drains away from the paved surface properly, preventing pooling or water damage that could compromise the stability of the patio.
